Fix-It Minute

The running toilet, fixed in 10 minutes

A toilet that keeps running can waste a lot of water every day. Most of the time the fix is a part that costs less than lunch.

  1. Lift the tank lid. Look at the rubber flapper at the bottom. That is the usual troublemaker.
  2. Do the dye test. Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank. Wait 15 minutes. Do not flush. Color in the bowl means the flapper leaks.
  3. Check the chain. Too tight and the flapper cannot seal. Leave a little slack.
  4. Check the water line. It should sit about an inch below the top of the overflow tube. Adjust the float if it is higher.
  5. Still running? Turn off the valve behind the toilet, take the old flapper to the hardware store, and match it.
